Social Networking

I earlier posted the following question in the wrong section of this site. I am working on a project (which also form part of my thesis). Your insightful responses will be valuable.

“Why organizations are gung-ho about implementing Social Networking Software? What are the benefits they envision by implementing such technologies? Does Social Networking software increase social capital that is resident in the organization?”

  1. Israr — Thanks for posting all these thought-provoking questions today! I’ll try to at least tackle this one this evening.

My area of research interest is knowledge management and online groups. Social networking is an integral part of this arena.

One thing to think about is getting more specific in what you mean by “social networking software.” There’s a wide range of applications–as simple as an email address book or as complicated as a corporate Orkut-like friend-of-a-friend networking implementation–that could fall under that heading.

There’s also lots of electronic communication methods that supports online communities (e.g., networks of practices) and, in turn, social networking.

In summary, give me a clear definition of what phenomenon you’re interested in and I can tackle your other questions better. 🙂

Finally, the question formulation “does X increase Y” is limiting. [Good advice I’ve heard: reword any research question with a yes/no answer.] A stronger wording for a research question might be “when does X lead to Y” or “under what conditions” does X relate to Y”

  2. Steven, thank you for your feedback. I am tackling the questions related to interaction of computer mediated communication and social capital. I am especially interested in understanding the mechanism through which various attributes of CMC affect social capital (in the organizational context) and in turn the outcomes such as knowledge sharing.

The original questions I posted where very simplistic to elicit the responses and discussion. Thanks for suggesting better formulation of research questions.

  4. I’m studying in the UK and about to write a dissertation on the impact/use of social networking sites on retention/workplace morale. Your entries are interesting and i’d be keen to see if you have moved on since July 2007…? My literature review focussed on social capital, knowledge management and engagement.

  5. Hello Graham,

I have completed my thesis… I am still working in this area and would be interested in in knowing more about your research topic…
